    With the boiler cold, knock on the vessel with your knuckles on both sides: if it sounds hollow evenly across the entire casing, it has lost its air precharge.

    A sharp bang is heard in the pipes when opening a hot water tap or just when the boiler starts up.

    Cause: Without the air cushion of the expansion vessel dampening the sudden flow change, that pressure surge is transmitted directly throughout the entire system.

    Bleed the radiators first and check that the shut-off valves are fully open: a circuit with trapped air makes the same noise and it's not always the expansion vessel.

  • 03

    The safety valve drips or releases water when the heating has been on for a while.

    Cause: Without an air cushion to absorb the expansion, the pressure rises above what the safety valve can tolerate, and it opens to relieve it.

    Check the pressure gauge right after starting and at 10-15 minutes: if it suddenly rises above 3 bar, point to the expansion vessel before the valve itself.
