  Cause: If the expansion vessel has lost its charge, it won't cushion the expansion of the water, and the pressure will suddenly rise until the valve activates.

  Check the pre-charge of the expansion vessel with the system cold before considering the valve as faulty.

  After manually moving the bleed lever to check it, the valve starts leaking and does not close properly again.

  Cause: Manual operation can dislodge a particle that gets trapped in the seat and prevents a tight seal.

  Repeat opening and closing the lever several times carefully to try to dislodge the dirt.

  The valve body is rusted, and the lever is difficult to move; it hardly gives way.

  Cause: Corrosion or internal deposits can seize the mechanism and leave it unable to actuate if the pressure rises.
