Wind-Free technology: how it works and if it's worth it

Samsung launched Wind-Free in Europe in 2017 and since then it has been the central feature of their residential range. Many customers come with specific questions:

How does it work?

The Wind-Free indoor unit has 23,000 micro-orifices of 1 mm distributed on the front panel. In Wind-Free mode (activatable from the control or the SmartThings app), the main louvre closes and the air is exclusively released through these micro-holes, creating a diffuse low-speed current (<0.15 m/s) instead of the typical direct jet of a conventional split. The result: the temperature is distributed more evenly and the sensation of direct wind on people is eliminated.

For whom does it make more sense

  • You will notice it if: you work or sleep directly under or in front of the split unit, you are sensitive to drafts, or you are in a space without furniture that interrupts the airflow.
  • Little differential if: The equipment is installed on the ceiling or side of a large room where the direct flow does not cause any real discomfort.

The energy cost of Wind-Free mode

In Wind-Free mode, the indoor fan operates at minimum speed to maintain the already reached temperature. The consumption in this mode is a 35-40% lower which in conventional active cooling mode. Samsung officially calls it "efficient maintenance mode." In practice, the unit first cools quickly with direct flow and then maintains with Wind-Free, combining comfort and efficiency.

💡 About the brand

Samsung is the world's largest consumer electronics manufacturer. Its air conditioning division (Samsung C&T) has been manufacturing air conditioning equipment for Asia since the 1990s and has had a strong presence in the European market since 2012. In Madrid, the series AQ (prior to Wind-Free, 2010‑2017) still has a very significant installed base in second-hand apartments, and the series Wind-Free It has rapidly gained market share in new installations since 2019 thanks to an aggressive pricing policy combined with technological differentiation.

Samsung range: current equipment and legacy fleet

Current Wind-Free range (2019‑2025)

  • Wind-Free Elite (AR09TXHQASI / AR12TXHQASI) — Samsung's premium range. A+++, WiFi with Samsung SmartThings, Wind-Free with intelligent mode and Fast Cooling for quick start-up. Motion sensor that detects presence and adjusts the setpoint.
  • Wind-Free Comfort (AR09BXFCAWI) — The mid-range and best-selling. A++, WiFi, full Wind-Free mode. Competitive quality/price ratio.
  • Luzon (AR12BXFCAWI) — The commercial name of the Wind-Free Comfort in its entry version in Spain. A+, WiFi, Wind-Free mode. The most economical Samsung with micro-hole technology.

AQ models: the old range is very present in Madrid

Between 2012 and 2018, Samsung sold a lot in Spain under the AQ series. Today, they represent a significant part of the second-hand market in Madrid. We see them daily in flats with owners who buy second-hand or in communities that have not renovated since then.

  • AQ09TSBN / AQ12TSBN / AQ18TSBN — Inverter splits from the 2013‑2016 generation. Spare parts are available, although with slightly longer lead times than the current range. The most common fault: the external PCB and the start capacitor.
  • AR09FSSEDWXNEU / AR12FSSEDWXNEU (generation 2016‑2018) — First generation of Samsung with optional WiFi. Compatible with the WiFi module MIM‑H04EN. Good units with a long lifespan.

Códigos de error Samsung

Samsung combines numeric codes, alphanumeric codes, and codes dedicated to sensors. In the SmartThings app, errors are displayed with descriptions. The most frequent ones in our interventions in Madrid:

E1‑09High pressure protectionDirty condenser, external fan stopped, or gas leak
E2‑09Low pressure protectionRefrigerant gas leak or faulty expansion valve
C1‑00Error comunicación int.‑ext.Damaged communication cable or loose terminal blocks; check wiring

Frequently Asked Questions about Samsung

Yes. In the Wind-Free Elite and Comfort models, the micro-hole diffusion mode works in both cooling and heating modes. In heating, it is particularly comfortable because hot air tends to accumulate at the ceiling, and slow diffusion helps to better homogenize the room temperature.

At 10 years, the AQ units are in the mid-phase of their lifespan. The vast majority of faults in that generation (PCBs, thermistors, motors) are repairable with available parts. If the compressor is functioning correctly, it is worth repairing. The only complication: some AQ models use R‑410A, which is no longer available for new refills, so if there is a leak, it must be located and sealed before legally recharging.

Yes, it is by design. The Wind-Free mode is intended to maintain the temperature already reached, not to cool down quickly. To lower the temperature in a hot room, the unit uses the conventional mode with direct airflow. Once the temperature has reached the setpoint, the unit automatically switches to Wind-Free to maintain it with comfort and low consumption. If the unit fails to reach the setpoint in normal mode, the issue is with performance (filters, gas, etc.) not with Wind-Free.

Yes. All Wind-Free models with WiFi (Comfort, Elite) integrate with Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and Apple HomeKit through the Samsung SmartThings app. The integration is complete: power on/off, mode change, temperature adjustment, and status check from any voice assistant or smart home application.

Internal filters (the fabric or mesh ones that are removed through the lower front cover): clean them under lukewarm water every 2-4 weeks during intensive use. The Samsung Wind-Free has a filter cleaning indicator on the display. For complete preventive maintenance —cleaning of the evaporator, condenser, drainage, gas and electrical check— we recommend once a year before summer.
