Thermal solar panels in Madrid: installation for DHW and heating support
Check applicable conditions for the equipment and contracted work: manufacturer, installation and repair do not necessarily have the same coverage. Keep the budget, invoice and documentation, without prejudice to the corresponding legal rights.
To estimate savings, it is necessary to know consumption per hour, orientation, shadows, available surface, installed price and tariff conditions. Estimated production does not automatically equate to bill savings. Compare usage scenarios before deciding, without assuming guaranteed profitability.
There are two collector technologies: the flat collector (the most widespread in Spain) is robust, economical, and has excellent performance in the climatic conditions of Madrid; the vacuum tube offers higher performance in conditions of intense cold or diffuse radiation (cloudy days), but has a higher initial cost and greater mechanical fragility. For exclusive DHW use in Madrid, the flat plate collector is the most common choice. If heating support is desired, vacuum tubes provide more energy in the winter months.
All the systems we install are closed circuit with antifreeze fluid (propylene glycol-water mixture, protection up to -30 °C) and include:
- Solar collectors (plans or vacuum tube) with Solar Keymark certification or equivalent, mounted on an aluminium structure on a sloped or flat roof.
- Solar accumulator with a heat exchanger coil (indirect cylinder) of 150-300 L for DHW, with a magnesium anode and inspection opening.
- Solar circulation pump and hydraulic group with flow meter, safety valve, and solar expansion vessel (designed for the high temperatures of the primary circuit, up to 160 °C in stagnation).
- Differential control unitactivates the pump when the collector temperature exceeds that of the storage tank by 5-8 °C and stops it when the difference drops to 2 °C, preventing nocturnal heat losses.
- Support system integrated with a gas boiler, heat pump, or electric resistance to ensure the DHW temperature when solar is insufficient.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many solar collectors do I need for a household of 4 people?
For a family of 4 people with an estimated consumption of 160-200 litres of DHW per day at 60 °C, the CTE-HE4 regulation in Madrid (Zone IV) requires covering 60-70% with solar energy. With flat plate collectors of 2.3-2.5 m² (peak efficiency ≈ 75%), 2 collectors (4.6-5 m² of surface area) and a storage tank of 200-250 litres are sufficient. If heating support is desired, it is recommended to add a third collector and a 300 L storage tank to have enough energy stored during the months of higher demand.
Can I combine solar thermal with my existing gas boiler?
To estimate savings, it is necessary to know consumption per hour, orientation, shadows, available surface, installed price and tariff conditions. Estimated production does not automatically equate to bill savings. Compare usage scenarios before deciding, without assuming guaranteed profitability.
