Portable air conditioning in Madrid: installation without construction and repair
Laptops are the only option when you cannot install a permanent outdoor unit. No construction, no refrigerant line, and no bureaucracy. At Uniclima, we inspect, clean, and repair: refrigeration circuit, fan motor, solenoid valve, and control board.
A portable air conditioning unit is a self-contained unit that houses the entire refrigeration circuit—compressor, condenser, evaporator, and fans—in a single rolling cabinet. It extracts heat from the indoor air and expels it outside through a flexible exhaust hose 10–15 cm in diameter that is vented through a window, sliding door, or shutter adapter. It does not require masonry work or the installation of an outdoor unit on the facade.
They are the ideal solution for rental apartments where the contract prohibits construction work, for temporary offices, for small server rooms that need occasional cooling, or for homes in protected buildings where the facade cannot be modified. We also use them as an emergency solution while a faulty split unit is being repaired in the summer.
What do we repair in laptops?
- →Leaks in the refrigeration circuit and refrigerant recharge (R410A, R32, R290)
- →Compressor replacement and review of working pressures
- →Condensation or evaporation fan motor (bearing, brushes, winding)
- →Reversing valve (heat/cool)
- →Control board, temperature sensor, and display
- →Cleaning of evaporator and condenser coils (dust accumulation reduces EER by up to 15%)
- →Condensate drainage system and water tank
Is it worth repairing?
Before quoting the repair of a laptop, we inform you of the estimated cost. If the repair exceeds 50% of the replacement value of the equipment, we tell you directly. Labour on repairs comes with a 12-month warranty.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are they as efficient as a split inverter?
No. A portable air conditioner with a capacity of 2,500 W consumes around 1,000–1,250 W of electricity to achieve that cooling performance (EER ≈ 2.0–2.5). A split inverter with similar power consumes 500–700 W for the same effect (EER ≈ 3.5–5.0). In practical terms, the portable unit can result in double the electricity bill per hour of operation. However, when there is no alternative —rental apartment, protected building, temporary use— it remains the most viable option.
Do they need maintenance?
Yes. The air filter should be cleaned every 2–4 weeks during continuous use: a clogged filter reduces airflow and strains the compressor, shortening its lifespan. The condensate tank (or the auto-evaporation system) should be emptied or checked for proper operation each season. Every 2–3 years, a deep cleaning of the coil with water and specific detergent is recommended to restore original performance.
How can I install the flue pipe without making a hole in the wall?
The most common solutions are: roller shutter adapter (placed between the shutter box and the window frame, allowing the tube to pass through); sliding window kit (telescopic PVC panel that adjusts to the width of the window and seals the gap); or simply passing the tube through a slightly open window and sealing the remaining space with a strip of foam. Any of these options allow for the installation of the portable unit in minutes without tools and without damaging the property.
