A multi-split system connects between 2 and 4 indoor units to a single outdoor unit through a branched refrigeration circuit. The major advantage compared to installing several independent splits is that you only need one opening on the facade—or a single placement point on the roof—for the outdoor unit. This is crucial when the homeowners' association limits the number of visible units or when the facade does not allow for multiple drillings.
The indoor units can be of different types: wall-mounted, ceiling cassettes, floor units, or even short ducts for each room. This gives you the freedom to adapt each area to its use. However, the sizing requires more precision than a simple split system: the total power of the indoor units cannot exceed the nominal capacity of the outdoor unit by more than 30%, and load balancing directly affects the efficiency and lifespan of the compressor.

Important before choosing a multi-split
The exterior of a multi-split system is more expensive than that of a 1x1 split. If you only need to air condition two rooms with similar use, two independent splits can be more economical and flexible. We offer advice without obligation on which is the best option for your case.

Can I add indoor units to the multi-split after installing it?
Only if the exterior has free connections and the available power allows it. A 3×1 exterior with two indoor units connected can accommodate a third one as long as the total power does not exceed the manufacturer's limit (usually 30% above the nominal capacity). To do it correctly, the circuit must be drained, the new refrigerant line installed, and the refrigerant reconnected and recharged. Plan it from the beginning: leaving the pre-installed lines during the renovation is much cheaper than opening walls later.
What happens if an indoor unit develops a fault?
In most modern multi-split systems, if an indoor unit fails (PCB, fan motor, sensor…), the rest can continue to operate normally. The outdoor unit detects the fault and stops sending refrigerant to that unit. Diagnosis is performed with a branded tool connected to the communication bus, allowing identification in minutes of which unit and component have failed without dismantling the entire system.
Does the multi-split provide heating as well as cooling?
Yes. All the multi-split systems we install are reversible heat pumps: in heating mode, they reverse the refrigeration cycle and extract heat from the outside to warm the interior. The COP (coefficient of performance) in heating is usually between 3.5 and 5, which means that for every kW of electricity consumed, you get between 3.5 and 5 kW of heat. At outdoor temperatures below –10 °C, the efficiency drops, but in the climate of Madrid, these are occasional situations.
