The safety valve releases pressure when the circuit exceeds its set point. These are the typical symptoms and what to do:
There is a puddle or moisture under the boiler, near where the drain pipe exits.
Cause: The safety valve is continuously leaking because the seat no longer seals.
Follow the discharge pipe to the valve to confirm that the water is coming from there and not from another nearby connection before replacing it.
The boiler bleeds water when heating, even though the starting pressure was normal.
Cause: The circuit does not properly absorb the expansion of the hot water, and the pressure exceeds the set point of 3 bar.
Check the expansion vessel pressure and the cold fill pressure of the circuit before replacing the valve.
The pressure spikes on the pressure gauge and the valve doesn't release any water.
Cause: The mechanism has become stuck, usually due to limescale, and does not release even if the safety limit is exceeded.
Operate the manual bleed lever, if it has one, to check if it responds before considering it faulty.
