Symptoms and faults resolved by ignition transformer 05111000
The ignition transformer generates the high voltage for the spark of the electrodes. These are the typical symptoms and what to do:
The boiler does not ignite and there is no noticeable spark clicking sound.
Cause: No output voltage from the transformer, the electrode does not generate an arc, and the gas never ignites.
Listen to the start-up with the cover on; the ticking of the spark should be clearly audible even if it's low.
The burner tries to ignite and turns off immediately.
Cause: A weak spark may ignite the gas for an instant but not sustain the flame long enough for the control unit to confirm it.
Check the gas pressure and ensure that the gas valve opens properly before assuming that the fault is solely with the transformer.
The boiler locks out due to ignition failure after two or three attempts.
Cause: If the electrode does not receive sufficient voltage from the transformer, the control unit does not detect a flame and shuts off for safety.
Check that the ignition electrode is not broken, sooty, or improperly positioned before replacing the transformer.
The ignition fault repeats the same way, start after start.
Cause: Unlike a gas fault, which is usually more erratic, a damaged transformer tends to fail consistently and repeatedly.
Note if the behavior is always identical; if so, it is an indication in favor of the transformer over other more variable causes.
