The circulating pump circulates the water in the heating circuit. These are the typical symptoms and what to do:
There is no circulation and the radiators are not heating, even though the boiler seems to ignite properly.
Cause: The rotor does not spin or spins very little, and the domestic hot water does not get distributed through the circuit.
Touch the pump body with the boiler running: if you don't feel any vibration, it's probably not spinning.
There is a humming or noise in the boiler that seems to come from the pump.
Cause: The motor may be straining against a rotor that doesn't spin freely, or there is air in the chamber.
Bleed the air from the circuit before replacing the pump, especially if the system has been refilled recently.
Water is leaking from the pump shaft.
Cause: The mechanical seal wears out over the years and gradually allows water to pass through.
Dry the area and check after a while of operation if the drop comes right from the shaft.
The pump gets stuck after the summer shutdown and does not start when the heating is used again.
Cause: Lime and prolonged inactivity can seize the rotor when it hasn't turned for months.
Before replacing it, try to manually unlock the shaft using the front screw, with the boiler cold and unplugged.
