  Cause: Without an air cushion to compensate, the pressure rises as soon as the water heats up and forces the gas valve to open.

  Compare the cold pressure with what the pressure gauge shows ten minutes after turning on; if it rises a lot and quickly, check the expansion vessel before the valve.

  You can hear banging or hammering in the pipes when the boiler starts up.

  Cause: Without the expansion vessel's cushioning, the water hammer is transmitted directly to the installation.

  Visually check if the expansion vessel has rust, bulging, or moisture at the base, which indicates it has been failing for some time.

  The expansion vessel sounds hollow from the outside, but when shaken, it feels heavy, as if it has water inside.

  Cause: It is the clearest symptom of a ruptured membrane: water has passed to the air side and the expansion vessel no longer fulfills its function.

  Disconnect the expansion vessel from the circuit and gently shake it; if you notice liquid movement, there's no need to check anything else.
