Transformer Ref. 287450 For Boiler VCM 242 E (and Other Compatible Models)
When you open the tap or turn on the heating, the Transformer Ref. 287450 for the VCM 242 E boiler generates the spark needed to ignite the burner. If this part fails, the boiler will attempt to start without being able to produce a flame, which can lead to faults F.28 and F.29. This transformer is compatible with several models from the Vaillant Turbo Tec, Atmo Tec, VC, and VMI ranges, among others. It is recommended to replace it if you notice that the boiler does not ignite or repeatedly shuts down.

How to check if ref. 287450 is the part for your boiler
What determines it is not the boiler model, but the reference printed on the part you already have installed.
- Find the reference printed on the installed part and check whether it matches the catalogue reference 287450. If it is not visible, do not identify the part from its shape alone.
- Check the full boiler model on its data plate and look for it in the model associations on this page.
- Compare the connections and physical body with the original part before installation.
- If anything is unclear, send us a photo of the marking via WhatsApp before placing your order.
Symptoms and faults that the ignition transformer 287450 resolves.
The ignition transformer generates the high voltage for the spark of the electrodes. These are the typical symptoms and what to do:
Common symptoms and faults
- 01
Sometimes it ignites well, and other times it needs two or three attempts to start.
Cause: A worn transformer produces an irregular arc, sufficient at times and not at others.
Check if the fault occurs more with the cold boiler or after some time in operation; if it worsens when heated, it could be a thermal issue with the transformer.
- 02
The boiler locks out showing an ignition fault, but the electrode does not generate a spark.
Cause: Without the proper voltage at the electrode, the gas does not ignite, and that voltage is provided by the transformer.
Before replacing it, check that the ignition cable is not cracked or loose and that the electrode has the correct spacing.
- 03
A failure to ignite warning appears every time it tries to start.
Cause: The control board does not detect the flame ionization because it does not receive the high voltage pulse that should be generated by the transformer.
Note the exact code displayed; in many models, the same warning can indicate a dirty electrode, a damaged cable, or a problem with the transformer, so it is advisable to rule out the other two first.
- 04
It has difficulty starting, making several attempts in a row before igniting, whereas before it would do so on the first try.
Cause: A poor ground connection at the electrode or transformer weakens the arc and delays ignition.
Check the continuity of the boiler's earth and the ground wire of the electrode before blaming the transformer.
Fault codes from Vaillant that this part resolves.
| Code | Fault | Diagnosis and solution |
|---|---|---|
| F.28 | Fault during start-up: the boiler fails to ignite the burner in the start-up phase. | The ignition transformer is part of the ignition system (transformer + cable + electrode); if the transformer fails, it does not generate the high voltage for the spark, and the boiler aborts the start-up without detecting a flame. Verify: measure the transformer's output voltage to the electrode and check for a spark at each start-up; if there is no spark and the wiring/electrode are fine, the transformer is the cause. |
| F.29 | The flame goes out during operation and re-ignition attempts fail. | The Vaillant service documentation explicitly lists "the ignition transformer has a spark fault" as the cause of F.29: if the transformer does not reignite after a flame failure, the lockout is triggered. Verify: check the spark generation of the transformer during ignition retries and rule out poor grounding, gas pressure, and condensate pipe before. |
These symptoms can have more than one cause. If your boiler displays a fault code, send it to us via WhatsApp along with a photo of the labeling, and we'll tell you if this is the part.
