Vaillant Ignition Transformer VMI 280-7 - Ref. 287450

Stock · 5 units

The Ignition Transformer Vaillant VMI 280-7 - Ref. 287450 is a component that generates the spark necessary to ignite the burner of the boiler. If this transformer fails, the boiler will attempt to start without being able to ignite the flame, which can lead to a system lockout. Users may notice symptoms such as the fault code F.28, which indicates that the boiler fails to ignite the burner, or fault code F.29, which signals that the flame goes out during operation. This transformer is compatible with several models from the Vaillant range, such as the VMI 280-7 and VMI 282-7, among others. It is recommended to replace the part when these ignition faults occur.

Guide

How to check if ref. 287450 is the part for your boiler

What determines it is not the boiler model, but the reference printed on the part you already have installed.

  1. Find the reference printed on the installed part and check whether it matches the catalogue reference 287450. If it is not visible, do not identify the part from its shape alone.
  2. Check the full boiler model on its data plate and look for it in the model associations on this page.
  3. Compare the connections and physical body with the original part before installation.
  4. If anything is unclear, send us a photo of the marking via WhatsApp before placing your order.
Diagnosis and fault codes

Symptoms and faults that the ignition transformer 287450 resolves.

The ignition transformer generates the high voltage for the spark of the electrodes. These are the typical symptoms and what to do:

Common symptoms and faults

  • 01

The boiler tries to ignite several times but fails to produce a flame.

Cause: The transformer does not produce the necessary voltage for the spark to jump at the electrode.

Unplug the boiler and, with the electrode accessible, visually check for a spark during ignition, with caution.

  • 02

The internal fuse of the transformer blows again after replacing it.

Cause: An internal short circuit in the winding causes the fuse to overload every time it is activated.

Make sure that the electrode and the high voltage cable do not touch the ground before concluding that the problem is the transformer.

  • 03

The spark at the electrode is weak or not visible.

Cause: The transformer winding is damaged and does not reach the necessary voltage to generate an adequate spark.

Check the condition and alignment of the electrode: a worn or improperly positioned electrode can cause the same issue.

  • 04

The boiler locks out after several failed ignition attempts.

Cause: Without sufficient spark, the control board does not detect ionization and cuts off the gas supply for safety.

Before assuming that the transformer is the problem, check the high voltage wiring and its connection to ground, as they can cause the same fault.

Fault codes from Vaillant that this part resolves.

CodeFaultDiagnosis and solution
F.28Fault during start-up: the boiler fails to ignite the burner in the start-up phase. The ignition transformer is part of the ignition system (transformer + cable + electrode); if the transformer fails, it does not generate the high voltage for the spark, and the boiler aborts the start-up without detecting a flame. Verify: measure the transformer's output voltage to the electrode and check for a spark at each start-up; if there is no spark and the wiring/electrode are fine, the transformer is the cause.
F.29The flame goes out during operation and re-ignition attempts fail. The Vaillant service documentation explicitly lists "the ignition transformer has a spark fault" as the cause of F.29: if the transformer does not reignite after a flame failure, the lockout is triggered. Verify: check the spark generation of the transformer during ignition retries and rule out poor grounding, gas pressure, and condensate pipe before.

These symptoms can have more than one cause. If your boiler displays a fault code, send it to us via WhatsApp along with a photo of the labeling, and we'll tell you if this is the part.
