With the boiler turned off, try to move the actuator arm by hand; if it is very stiff, check for scale or dirt in the gas valve.

The valve does not complete its travel and gets stuck halfway.
Cause: The actuator loses strength or becomes decoupled from the shaft before reaching the end.
Check that the actuator is properly fitted onto the valve shaft, without any play, before replacing it.

The actuator gets very hot or smells burnt.
Cause: The motor is straining against a stuck valve and is suffering from overexertion.
