The 3-way valve diverts water between heating and domestic hot water. These are the typical symptoms and what to do:

• 01

  The domestic hot water comes out lukewarm and never really gets hot, even though the burner ignites.

  Cause: The shutter does not fully move to the DHW side, causing some of the heat to be lost to the heating circuit.

  Temporarily raise the domestic hot water thermostat to the maximum to rule out a low setting before checking the gas valve.

  The radiators are hot when there shouldn't be any heating demand, with the room thermostat turned off.

  Cause: If the stem does not return to its resting position, it continues to allow hot water to flow to the radiators even when there is no demand.

  Check that the room thermostat and the programmer are actually turned off before assuming that the gas valve has remained open.

• 03

  When switching from heating to domestic hot water, a motor can be heard forcing for several seconds before noticing the change.

  Cause: The valve motor takes longer than usual to move the shutter due to mechanical resistance, typically caused by accumulated scale.

  Count the seconds it takes to switch; if it clearly exceeds the usual few seconds, there is more resistance than normal in the mechanism.

  The boiler gradually loses pressure and needs to be refilled every so often, with no visible leak in any radiator.

  Cause: A damaged internal gasket in the 3-way valve can allow water to pass between circuits or to the outside without leaving an obvious puddle.

  First, check the usual points of leakage (bleed valves, expansion vessel, safety group) before disassembling the gas valve to inspect it.

  There is no domestic hot water at all, although the heating is working normally.

  Cause: If the shutter gets stuck in the heating position, all the flow goes to the radiators and nothing reaches the domestic hot water circuit.

  First, check the flow meter or the domestic hot water flow sensor before replacing the gas valve, because a fault there produces the same symptom.
