The filling valve allows water to refill the heating circuit. These are the typical symptoms and what to do:

  The pressure in the heating circuit is gradually rising without anyone having touched anything.

  Cause: If the internal seat of the valve does not close completely, it allows a continuous drip of mains water into the circuit.

  Close the valve completely and check the gauge needle; if it continues to rise after a couple of hours, the valve is not sealing properly.

  Humidity or a droplet of water appears in the area of the valve, even when it is closed.

  Cause: The gasket or the shaft of the valve wears out over the years, and the mains water eventually leaks outside the body.

  Dry the area well and check a few hours later if the moisture reappears with the valve closed; if it only gets wet when you open it, the hose may be the issue.

  It is very difficult to turn the key to refill, or it gets stuck halfway.

  Cause: The limescale from the mains water accumulates in the internal mechanism and clogs it, especially in taps that are used infrequently.

  Try gentle back-and-forth movements before forcing it; many times it releases and does not need to be replaced.

  When opening to fill the circuit, very little water enters or it takes a long time to regain pressure.

  Cause: If the internal passage of the valve is partially obstructed by limescale or debris, the flow it allows is insufficient.

  Check that the main water shut-off valve is fully open; it is the most common cause of this symptom.
